An Unbiased Survey for Molecular Clouds in the Southern Galactic Warp

چکیده
We have made an unbiased survey for molecular clouds in the Galactic Warp. This survey, covering an area of 56 square degrees at l = 252 to 266 and b = −5 to −1, has revealed 70 molecular clouds, while only 6 clouds were previously known in the region. The number of molecular clouds is, then, an order of magnitude greater than previously known in this sector at R > ∼ 14.5 kpc. The mass of the clouds is in a range from 7.8×102M⊙ to 8.4×10 4M⊙, significantly less than the most massive giant molecular clouds in the inner disk, ∼106M⊙, while the cloud mass spectrum characterized by a power law is basically similar to other parts of the Galaxy. The X factor, N(H2)/ ∫ T (CO)dV , derived from the molecular clouds in the Warp is estimated to be 3.5(±1.8) times larger than that in the inner disk. The total molecular mass in the Warp is estimated as 7.3×10 M⊙, and total mass in the far-outer Galaxy (R > ∼ 14.5 kpc) can be estimated as 2×10 7 M⊙. The spatial correlation between the CO and H I distribution appears fairly good, and the mass of the molecular gas is about 1% of that of the atomic gas in the far-outer Galaxy. This ratio is similar to that in the interarm but is ten times smaller than those of the spiral arms. Only 6 of the 70 Warp clouds show signs of star formation at the IRAS sensitivity and star formation efficiency for high-mass stars in the Warp is found to be smaller than those in other molecular clouds in the Galaxy.

A Large Extension of the CfA Galactic CO Survey
The Galactic CO survey of Dame, Hartmann, & Thaddeus (2001; hereafter DHT) is composed of both large-scale unbiased surveys, mainly concentrated within 10 • of the Galactic plane, and targeted observations of clouds at higher latitudes. Analysis of all-sky IRAS and 21 cm maps suggests that the DHT survey is nearly complete for clouds larger than ∼ 1 • , even though roughly half of the total are...
متن کاملThe H2O southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS): NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) catalogues
The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) has mapped a 100degree strip of the Galactic plane (−70 > l > 30, |b| < 0.5) using the 22-m Mopra antenna at 12-mm wavelengths. Observations were conducted in on-the-fly mode using the Mopra spectrometer (MOPS), targeting water masers, thermal molecular emission and radio-recombination lines. Foremost among the thermal lines are the 23GHz transition...
متن کاملSmall Molecular Clouds at High Latitudes as Gamma-Ray Sources for GLAST
The sensitivity of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the forthcoming GLAST mission will be so much greater than previous high-energy γ-ray missions that small molecular clouds at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 10) will be detected in the light of diffuse γ-ray emission from cosmic-ray interactions. These clouds are small, typically subtending less than 1 with masses ∼10–100 sol...
متن کاملExploring High-Velocity NH3(6,6) Emission at the Center of our Galaxy
Using the NH3 (6,6) transition, which samples dense (∼ 10 ) molecular gas with an energy above ground of 412 K, we find hot gas at high velocities (–142 to –210 km s) associated with the central 2 pc of the Galactic center. This material may be either infalling gas due to shocks or tidal stripping, or possibly gas swept from the nuclear region. We identify two high-velocity features, which we c...
متن کاملNew discovery of weak-line T Tauri stars in high-Galactic latitude molecular clouds
Star formation efficiency in translucent molecular clouds has long been an unresolved and key issue in the field of low-mass star formation. In this paper, we report on the results of our survey for low-mass star formation in high-Galactic latitude molecular clouds, especially those of the translucent category, based on the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Nine new weak-line T Tauri star candidates have b...
